What's it like to be a Patternmaker?
Patternmakers create templates of fashion products such as clothes, shoes and swimwear so they can be reproduced in bulk. They sketch and create the patterns either manually or digitally, or a combination of both.
Tasks and duties
- Determining styles, design and material of garments with customer input.
- Cutting patterns out.
- Determining pattern specifications.
- Providing accurate yield estimates for patterns.
- Attending fit sessions to ensure changes are recorded and executed.
- Managing production approvals process, ensuring manufacturing follows the pattern and any changes to it closely.
- Resolving fit and quality issues.
- Working with computer software to design, input data and manage approvals.

Although formal qualifications are not essential, they may be an advantage if you want to become a Patternmaker.
- 1.Undertake a Certificate III in Applied Fashion Design and Technology (MST30819) at TAFE or a registered training organisation. This course will take approximately 2 years full-time.
- 2.Consider completing a Bachelor of Design at university or at a private college. These courses will take approximately 3 years full-time to complete. You’ll need either to have completed year 12 (no ATAR required), a Certificate IV level or higher vocational qualification or have completed one year of full-time university study. You will also usually need to submit a portfolio with your application.

Some creative, pay is ok,but these days you need to do 3 people jobs,constantly death line to meet,no many jobs out there,all the big fashion company in Australia are slowing disappear.
The challenges
I will advise consider move to some other section in this fashion trade like buyer,designer,marketing, and Merchindiser

Patternmaker is very skilfull profeshion ,creative job.Only not many companies need patternmakers in this country.
Companies rather employ garment technicians to write specs.thats why fit is not good....
