What's it like to be a Sustainability Officer?
Sustainability Officers are responsible for helping communities to thrive and become enduring hubs of social, environmental and economic livelihood for their residents. They are often responsible for policy and programs.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing community needs and impacts to the environment.
- Speaking with relevant stakeholders.
- Representing the organisation at forums.
- Working with stakeholders to develop projects to create positive community impacts.
- Making recommendations on existing projects to lessen negative community impacts.
- Providing information and guidance to community about sustainable practices, resources available and upcoming projects.
- Investigating and keeping across best practice sustainability.
- Preparing documentation for grants.
- Developing sustainability programs.
Sustainability Officers spend a lot of time indoors in an office, but they also spend a lot of time out in the community. Sustainability Officers may work for local, state and federal government departments, as well as private organisations.

It may be an advantage to hold a qualification in sustainability, environmental science or natural resource management when pursuing a career as a Sustainability Officer.
- 1.Complete an undergraduate degree in a field such as sustainability, environmental science, natural resource or environmental management. An undergraduate degree will generally take 3 years full-time to complete, and completion of year 12 is usually required for entry.
- 2.If you’ve already earned an undergraduate degree in a different area, consider postgraduate qualifications in sustainability. A Master of Environmental Management will usually take 2 years to complete full-time, and entry requirements typically include completion of an undergraduate degree or significant work experience in a related field.
