What's it like to be an Anthropologist?
Anthropologists are scientists who research and evaluate different aspects of human societies, both past and present, including religions, rituals, family and belief systems, languages, art, music and economic and political systems.
Tasks and duties
- Writing about and presenting research findings.
- Planning and coordinating research to compare the economic, demographic, health care, social, political, linguistic, and religious institutions of different cultural groups, communities and organisations.
- Gathering and analysing artifacts to enhance knowledge of ancient cultures.
- Explaining the origins and physical, social, or cultural development of humans, including cultural traditions, beliefs, languages, resource management practices, and settlement patterns.
- Identifying culturally specific beliefs and practices affecting health status and access to services for distinct populations and communities, in collaboration with medical and public health officials.
Anthropologists may work in a variety of institutions, such as universities, advertising agencies and market research companies. Responsibilities vary depending on the sector they are working in. At universities, for example, Anthropologists may undertake research or teach courses. At advertising agencies, Anthropologists may undertake research and audits to deliver insights for clients.

To become an Anthropologist, you usually have to complete a bachelor degree in Science, Arts,
Social Science or International Studies at university with a major in anthropology (preferably with Honours), followed by a postgraduate qualification in Anthropology.
- 1.Complete a Bachelor degree (preferably with Honours) in Science, Arts, Social Science or International Studies with a major in Anthropology. Universities have different prerequisites and some have flexible entry requirements or offer external study. It may be helpful to be conversant in a second language, especially if you are interested in collecting information about another society.
- 2.Complete a postgraduate degree in Anthropology.
- 3.You may choose to become a member of the Australian Anthropological Society –membership is open to people who have completed an Honours degree in Anthropology.
