What's it like to be a Career Development Practitioner?
Career Development Practitioners provide advice about employment, training and career progression to professionals, executives and people looking to change careers. They help people to understand and develop their skills in order to make career and education decisions.
Career Development Practitioners work in a variety of settings including schools, TAFEs, universities, government departments, corporate businesses, and private practice. They may work one-to-one or with small and large groups to provide career education, job placement and recruitment services or coordinate work experience and internship programs.
Hi there,
Want to explore jobs picked just for you?How to become a Career Development Practitioner
A qualification is required to become a Career Development Practitioner, especially if you would like to seek membership with a professional body.
- 1.Consider completing a Certificate IV in Career Development (CHC41215) through a registered training organisation. This is the entry-level qualification for career development practitioners in Australia but does not equip you to deliver career guidance with an individual or group.
- 2.Alternatively, choose an undergraduate qualification in a field of study related to career development. These include: education, human resources, coaching, psychology, counselling, human services, management, social science, sociology and training and development.
- 3.Complete a Graduate Certificate in Career Development. This is the minimum qualification required to gain recognition with the Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) as a Professional Career Development Practitioner.
- 4.Apply for membership with a CICA Member Association. Various membership levels are available depending on your level of qualification.
