What's it like to be a Chief Information Officer?
Chief Information Officers take executive responsibility for the performance of an organisation’s IT and digital technology departments. They use a mixture of technical and strategic skills to plan and direct the technical resources of an organisation and find opportunities for increased performance and efficiency.
Tasks and duties
- Analysing organisational IT resources and requirements.
- Directing selection and training of IT resources.
- Directing technical operations and setting priorities and goals.
- Formulating strategies and plans for use of technical resources.
- Managing relationships between technology assets and business operations.
- Delegating tasks and assigning responsibilities to others.
- Identifying opportunities for increased efficiency and reduced costs.
Analytical skills, advanced computer skills and leadership abilities are key to the role of a Chief Information Officer. They work for government departments and companies in the professional, scientific and technical services, financial services and IT industries.

A degree in computer science, IT or a related field is usually required in order to become a Chief Information Officer. Many people currently working in this occupation hold a postgraduate qualification. You may also be required to hold extensive industry experience.
- 1.Complete a degree in computer science, software engineering or a related field. These are usually three-year course of full-time study, with prerequisites including completion of Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) and required units or assumed knowledge in English and mathematics.
- 2.Consider completing postgraduate study, such as the Master of Computer Science or a Master of Business Administration.
- 3.Consider completing additional IT and management certifications to enhance your strategic skill set.
- 4.Consider joining a professional association, such as the ACS. You may be eligible for student membership while studying, with full membership becoming available upon graduation.
- 5.Gain extensive work experience in a leadership capacity across a range of businesses or work your way up through a company. In small and medium companies, you may attain the position of Chief Technical Officer with fewer years of experience, whereas larger companies may require over a decade or more of industry experience.
