What's it like to be an Anaesthetic Technician?
Anaesthetic Technicians are part of an important healthcare team. They prepare and maintain the anaesthetic equipment for operating theatres and medical clinics, and work closely with a qualified Anaesthetist, preparing patients for anaesthesia and monitoring and caring for them during and after surgery. Anaesthetic Technicians participate in a wide range of surgeries and may need to respond quickly to emergencies such as allergic reactions.
Tasks and duties
- Setting up, checking and maintaining anaesthetic equipment, life support machines and associated equipment.
- Ordering and preparing medical supplies for anaesthesia.
- Discussing medical procedures with patients and finding out their medical histories.
- Assisting the Anaesthetist to administer anaesthesia.
- Monitoring and recording patients and their vital signs before, during and after medical procedures.
- Assisting with basic life support and post-operative care.
- Assisting the Anaesthetist in emergencies.
How to become an Anaesthetic Technician
To become a qualified Anaesthetic Technician, you typically need to complete an approved qualification in anaesthetic technology.
- 1.Complete a Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology and Practice (HLT57921). This course is delivered over two years and includes a full-time clinical placement in a hospital or clinic.
- 2.Ensure you have up-to-date immunisations as required, and complete certifications and checks such as a First Aid Certificate, Police Check and Working with Children Check.
- 3.Look to gain work experience in the anaesthetic area of a hospital or medical clinic, working under an appropriately qualified supervisor.
- 4.Consider becoming a member of Australian Anaesthesia Allied Health Practitioners (AAAHP). Registration may be a requirement of employment for many public and private hospitals and medical clinics.
