What's it like to be an Android Developer?
Android Developers are Software Developers who specialise in building apps for the Android operating system. They interpret design features and write programming code to turn designs into usable applications.
Tasks and duties
- Staying updated with changes to new versions of the Android operating system.
- Liaising with stakeholders to understand user requirements and determine project scope.
- Developing wireframes to demonstrate new features and user interfaces.
- Maintaining, updating and organising code base.
- Writing and testing code for use in the live environment.
- Finding and fixing bugs and removing bottlenecks to improve application performance.
- Collaborating with designers and other software engineers to design and build new products.
How to become an Android Developer
You can work as an Android Developer without formal qualifications, but coding skills and knowledge of Android-supported programming languages are essential. Completing a relevant degree may provide an advantage.
- 1.Complete a relevant degree, such as a Bachelor of Computer Science or Bachelor of Software Engineering (Honours). This usually takes three to four years.
- 2.Look for internship opportunities while studying to gain workplace experience and mentorship from experienced Software Developers.
- 3.Consider enhancing your skills with postgraduate study, such as a Master of Computer Science. This usually takes one to two years.
- 4.Consider completing short courses and IT certifications to develop your specialisation in Android-supported programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, C++, C#, Python and JavaScript.
- 5.After gaining some experience, you could start your own software company or freelance consultancy.
