What's it like to be an Aquaculture Technician?
Aquaculture Technicians work on fish farms in freshwater or marine environments. They are responsible for feeding, grading and processing fish in preparation for sale, monitoring water quality and checking for diseases and predators. Aquaculture Technicians enjoy working in an outdoor environment, and may be required to operate boats, forklifts and other machinery. They work for private fisheries, hatcheries and nurseries, state and federal fishery authorities and research organisations.
Tasks and duties
- Monitoring water quality and recording water quality data.
- Assisting with the layout and construction of nets, cages and long lines.
- Operating boats, small cranes, forklifts and other equipment.
- Feeding fish and removing dead or dying fish.
- Identifying and reporting signs of aquatic diseases, pests or predators.
- Monitoring growth of fish and grading fish.
- Harvesting fish and sorting and packing for transportation.
- Restocking farm environment with juvenile fish.
How to become an Aquaculture Technician
You don’t need formal qualifications to work as an Aquaculture Technician, but some employers prefer candidates with a Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification in aquaculture. Additional certifications such as a forklift licence may also be required. Some on the job training is usually provided.
- 1.Consider completing the Certificate III in Aquaculture (SFI30119).
- 2.Some employers may require you to hold additional certifications, such as a boat or forklift licence. These can be obtained via completion of short courses from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
- 3.If you wish to broaden your career options in the aquaculture industry, consider completing additional qualifications such as the Diploma of Aquaculture (SFI50119).
