What's it like to be a Banking Specialist?
Banking Specialists provide information and services to banking customers. They open and close accounts, process transactions and provide advice on services and products in person, online or over the phone. Banking Specialists need strong communication and data analysis skills and may specialise in one or more types of banking.
Tasks and duties
- Opening and closing bank accounts for customers.
- Processing transactions.
- Explaining services offered to customers.
- Identifying customer needs and recommending products and services.
- Cashing cheques and cash and paying correct amounts into customer accounts.
- Recording transactions, verifying customer records and receipts.
- Balancing cash and informing supervisors of discrepancies.
- Providing customer service in person, online and over the phone.
How to become a Banking Specialist
You can work as a Banking Specialist without a formal qualification, but a tertiary qualification may provide an advantage. Experience in the banking industry is usually required. On-the-job training may be provided.
- 1.Complete a relevant qualification. This could be a Certificate IV in Financial Services (FNS41820) or Certificate IV in Banking Services (FNS42020), which usually take one year. Alternatively, complete a Bachelor of Finance which typically takes three years and may provide broader career options.
- 2.Build experience working in a customer service-based role in a bank or other financial institution.
- 3.Develop your specialisation in one or more areas of personal or business banking to continue progressing your banking career.
