What's it like to be a Cardiac Technologist?
Cardiac Technologists provide support to the Cardiology team for the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases and other conditions such as an irregular heartbeat. As a Cardiac Technologist you will operate a range of specialist equipment to provide data that Cardiologists and other medical practitioners use for patient care.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing patients for medical procedures, setting up medical devices, and connecting patients to diagnostic and monitoring equipment.
- Operating diagnostic systems and carrying out any non-medical procedures that may be necessary for the diagnosis.
- Using an Electrocardiogram (ECG) to record the electrical activity of the heart, from which the heart rate is measured and its pattern and rhythm are interpreted.
- Assessing patients’ cardiac response to exercise using a treadmill or stationary bicycle and an ECG recording.
- Testing implanted cardiac pacemakers with computerised equipment, and if necessary, reprogramming them.
- Operating ultrasound equipment to scan the heart, and obtaining and measuring images of the heart to assess blood flow and valve abnormalities.
How to become a Cardiac Technologist
To become a Cardiac Technologist, you usually have to complete a bachelor degree at university with a major in Biophysics, Health Science, Nursing, Physiology or Exercise Physiology. These university courses are open to anyone who is 17 and over and has completed Year 12 with appropriate prerequisite subjects, including one or more of the following subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree, with a major in in Biophysics, Health Science, Nursing, Physiology or Exercise Physiology.
- 2.Gain employment as a Cardiac Technologist.
- 3.Once you are employed as a Cardiac Technologist, you will receive some on-the-job training and may be required to undertake further study in Cardiac Technology.
- 4.Cardiac Technologists performing ECGs need to be accredited with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR) and be listed on the ASAR register of Accredited Medical Sonographers (AMS).
