What's it like to be a Design Lead?
Design Leads work across a variety of industries and lead the creative direction of design projects. Design Leads commonly work on digital products. They might be responsible for designing new products in order to reach new customers, designing new services that solve problems for users, or improving websites so they are more user-friendly.
Tasks and duties
- Collaborating with Designers, Product Developers and Product Managers to create better products and services.
- Communicating design strategies to assist with product development and goals.
- Creating design briefs based on project proposals and client feedback.
- Communicating with multiple stakeholders.
- Presenting and promoting design solutions.
How to become a Design Lead
To become a Design Lead, you typically need a bachelor degree and extensive industry experience. Additional qualifications and experience may be required depending on your field of design.
- 1.Complete a relevant bachelor degree, such as a Bachelor of Design. This usually takes three years of full-time study.
- 2.Undertake an industry placement as part of your degree. You could also seek voluntary positions in product or service design to gain more skills. Having a design portfolio to prove your skills will improve your employability.
- 3.Consider starting off in a role that focuses on hands-on design skills, such as Designer or Graphic Designer.
- 4.Consider enhancing your skills with a postgraduate degree in design, or develop relevant leadership skills with a Master of Business Administration.
