What's it like to be an Embryologist?
Embryologists are responsible for retrieving eggs, assisting with in vitro fertilisation, maintaining clinical records and running tests on eggs. Embryologists often work in hospitals and fertility clinics, but may also work in laboratories or in universities or commercial industries.
Tasks and duties
- Retrieving eggs from patients.
- Running tests on eggs.
- Performing or assisting with in vitro fertilisation and other procedures.
- Studying embryos from the beginning of conception.
- Maintaining clinical records.
How to become an Embryologist
To become an Embryologist, you typically need to complete a bachelor degree in a science-related discipline. A relevant postgraduate qualification may be preferred by some hirers.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in science or biomedical science to build foundational knowledge.
- 2.Look to gain experience in a laboratory setting. Experience working on embryology procedures such as intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and embryo vitrification may be advantageous.
- 3.To work with different Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), consider completing a Master of Clinical Embryology. On completion of this course, you will have developed the specialised knowledge and skills needed to work in, and manage, human ART clinics.

The challengesYou will be required to work weekends and do overtime as needed. You will get compensated for it though, so it just depends how important your work/life balance is to you.
