What's it like to be a Fund Manager?
A managed fund involves pooling together money from one or more investors into a fund that’s invested and controlled by a professional Fund Manager. Fund Managers implement the fund’s investment strategy and manage the trading activities of the portfolio on behalf of clients.
Tasks and duties
- Meeting with existing and potential clients to understand their preferences, including how much risk they are comfortable with in order to find the right mix of investments.
- Researching companies and studying the financial industry and the economy in order to determine the best possible investments for clients.
- Keeping up to date with trends in the industry in order to make key decisions that are consistent with the fund's goals.
- Implementing a fund's investment strategy and managing its trading activities.
- Periodically meeting with clients to discuss the progress of their investments and providing reports and charts illustrating their performance.
How to become a Fund Manager
To become a Fund Manager, you must have a high level of education and professional accreditation, as well as appropriate levels of investment management experience.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in finance, accounting, economics or business.
- 2.Look to secure a placement in an internship program while studying. Industry experience is a critical step in the process of starting a career as a Fund Manager.
- 3.Get an entry-level position in finance, such as a Financial Analyst position.
- 4.Consider completing a Master of Business Administration or a masters degree in finance.
- 5.Consider gaining certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder. This certification is an effective way to accelerate your learning and demonstrate your commitment to becoming a Fund Manager.
