What's it like to be a Game Designer?
Games Designers invent, develop, create and produce computer or video games. Game Designers may work alongside Animators, Game Developers and Producers.
Tasks and duties
- Work in games development teams to make creative decisions about games’ concepts, interfaces, maps, scenarios, characters, storylines and game play.
- Undertake computer-generated design and apply design, narrative imaging, modelling and animation to game environments.
- Developing user interface concepts, including menus and controls, and work to improve existing game
How to become a Game Designer
To work as a Game Designer in Australia, you usually need a qualification in digital and interactive games, computer games design, animation or digital media technologies. It is also possible to become a game designer through a traineeship, but whichever career path is taken work experience and a portfolio of work is desirable from an employer’s perspective.
- 1.Undertake a qualification in the area of game design. This is commonly a Certificate IV in Information Technology (Gaming Development) (ICT40120) or a Diploma of Information Technology (ICT50220).
- 2.Gain work experience in the field and build a portfolio of work.
- 3.Game Designers wanting to further their career may wish to undertake degree-level qualifications such as a Bachelor of Games Design to work towards becoming a Lead Game Designer.

The good thingsThe gaming industry is a fun and amazing place to work, lots of different people and the projects can be amazing to work on.
The challengesIn Perth the roles are volunteery at the most, their is not work here for game designers unless you have self funding.
