What's it like to be a Gastroenterologist?
As a Gastroenterologist you will treat a range of conditions affecting the gastrointestinal system, such as oesophagitis, gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. You will also treat inflammatory bowel diseases (like Crohn’s disease), liver problems (such as hepatitis), as well as both cancerous and benign tumours.
Tasks and duties
- Examining patients to investigate the cause of symptoms such burning pain in the oesophagus, abdominal pain, or bleeding from the stomach.
- Treating patients by prescribing medications.
- Performing procedures such as gastroscopies, endoscopies, colonoscopies and biopsies.
How to become a Gastroenterologist
Gastroenterology is a specialist area of medicine and it takes serval years to achieve employment in this area. To become a Gastroenterologist, you must first complete degree in medicine at university.
- 1.Complete a Bachelor of Medical Studies / Doctor of Medicine double degree at an accredited university in Australia. These are typically open to anyone who is 17 and over and has completed Year 12 with appropriate prerequisite subjects, including one or more of the following: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Alternatively, complete an undergraduate degree followed by a Doctor of Medicine.
- 2.Become a registered Medical Practitioner, and undertake a minimum of two years’ post-degree medical experience in a public hospital.
- 3.Apply to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) to undertake further training, including the RACP Written and Clinical Examinations.
- 4.Undertake internal medicine training for three years followed by specialised Gastroenterology training for three years.
- 5.Successful trainees will be admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).
