What's it like to be a Greenkeeper?
Greenkeepers establish and maintain turf, grassed areas and synthetic surfaces for sporting venues and events, including golf courses, cricket grounds, tennis courts, bowling and croquet greens.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing seedbeds for new turf.
- Establishing and maintaining turf by watering, sowing or seeding.
- Mowing and levelling turf.
- Marking out lines, installing nets, posts and stumps, and placing other sports equipment on playing areas.
- Operating and maintaining hand and power equipment such as mowers, aerators, cultivators and line marking equipment.
- Replanting, repairing, watering, aerating and fertilising lawns.
- Installing and maintaining synthetic surfaces.
- Maintaining buildings, fences and surrounding gardens.
How to become a Greenkeeper
You can work as a Greenkeeper without formal qualifications, however employers may prefer individuals to have a qualification in the field.
- 1.Consider completing a Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30716), or a Certificate III in Sports Turf Management (AHC31319).
- 2.Get some on-the-job training by working as an assistant for a qualified Greenkeeper.
- 3.Consider gaining a chemical spraying certificate or licence.
