What's it like to be a Group Accountant?
Group Accountants work within an organisation's finance department. They provide accurate financial information to ensure management meets its statutory requirements and achieves strategic business goals across the whole business. Group Accountants typically work for large organisations with a group of smaller companies, or subsidiaries, and can manage the accounts of multiple companies at the same time.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing and analysing a group’s accounts and board reports.
- Preparing and managing a group’s reporting for owners and stakeholders.
- Preparing ad-hoc reports and papers for the board and senior management.
- Assisting with the preparation and management of annual budgets.
- Managing quarterly forecasts.
- Liaising with business units and banks to manage an organisation’s cash flow.
- Overseeing an organisation’s consolidated accounts across multiple business units.
- Managing and overseeing a group’s accounting system – including implementation and changes as required.
- Providing financial advice, assistance and guidance to business units.
- Preparing an organisation’s income tax return.
- Managing day-to-day income tax related matters.
- Assisting with company secretarial and corporate governance requirements, such as ASIC lodgements and board resolutions.
How to become a Group Accountant
Group Accountants need an accredited degree and extensive industry experience. Many Group Accountants also join a professional association to participate in an accreditation program.
- 1.Complete an accredited bachelor degree, such as a Bachelor of Accounting or Bachelor of Business (Accounting). This usually takes three years of full-time study.
- 2.After graduating, you will become eligible to join a professional accounting body such as Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ). Apply to participate in an accreditation program offered by one of these institutions to enhance your credentials and employability.
- 3.Gain industry experience and seek mentorship from accountants with experience managing multiple accounts.
