What's it like to be a Herbalist?
Herbalists study herbalism, the use of plant-based medicines and natural methods to diagnose, treat and prevent illness. They take a holistic approach to mental and physical wellbeing and often prescribe herbal medicines which are designed to improve the mind and body’s overall state rather than treat a specific set of symptoms.
Tasks and duties
- Interviewing and assessing clients.
- Preparing and administering wet and dry plant-based medicines.
- Monitoring and correcting imbalances in the body using muscle testing techniques.
- Advising clients on dietary requirements and lifestyle programs.
- Developing and administering ongoing treatment plans.
- Evaluating and documenting patients' progress through treatment plans.
- Prescribing natural medicines, such as herbal, mineral and animal extracts, to stimulate the body's capacity for self-healing
How to become a Herbalist
There are no formal prerequisites to become a Herbalist, however the majority of practising Herbalists have qualifications in the field of Herbal Medicine. It is recommended to register with the Australian Register of Naturopaths and Herbalists (ARONAH) upon completing your studies.
- Complete a qualification in herbal medicine, such as a Bachelor of Health Science (Western Herbal Medicine).
- Obtain a first aid certificate.
- Hold a current working with children check card.
- Register with ARONAH and renew every 12 months, including demonstrating the mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Registration requires documentation detailing your professional indemnity insurance and qualifications and must be renewed each year.
