What's it like to be an Insurance Broker?
Insurance Brokers provide advice about insurance products and arrange policies on behalf of customers. They service a list of clients and research, review and present insurance offerings to inform their client’s choice of insurer and policy. Insurance Brokers need to keep up to date with new and updated insurance products to ensure they provide clients with the latest information. They work for personal, commercial and corporate insurance broking companies.
Tasks and duties
- Creating lists of potential clients.
- Interviewing potential clients to explain insurance features and determine the appropriate type and amount of coverage.
- Negotiating policy premiums and conditions on behalf of clients.
- Advising clients on significant changes to current policies.
- Researching and reviewing insurance offerings from multiple providers and providing recommendations.
- Arranging insurance policies according to client instructions and preferences.
How to become an Insurance Broker
You need to complete vocational education and training (VET) qualifications to work as an Insurance Broker. The courses you undertake must be compliant with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s guidelines.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Financial Services (FNS30120). This will prepare you for entry-level roles in the industry.
- 2.Gain experience at an insurance broking business working under the supervision of a licensed insurance broker.
- 3.Complete a Diploma of Insurance Broking (FNS51220). This will take around 12 months of full-time study.
- 4.Apply to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission for your Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL). Requirements for your licence may vary depending on the type of insurance you want to work with.
