What's it like to be a Materials Engineer?
Materials Engineers study metals and other materials to develop them for use in commercial applications. They test and analyse the properties of materials to be used in products and processes.
Tasks and duties
- Studying the properties of metals, alloys, plastics, polymers, ceramics, composites and other materials.
- Finding new uses for existing materials.
- Designing tests and processes to determine the suitability of materials.
- Overseeing manufacturing and testing processes.
- Using laboratory equipment to analyse the properties of materials.
- Working with other engineers and specialists.
- Testing and monitoring material performance.
- Considering design and manufacturing objectives and selecting recommended materials.
- Designing and implementing laboratory processes for the review of materials in line with cost and performance objectives.
How to become a Materials Engineer
An engineering degree with honours is usually required to become a Materials Engineer. It is also recommended to join professional associations such as Engineers Australia and Materials Australia, and register with the National Engineering Register (NER).
- 1.Complete a Bachelor of Engineering (Materials) (Honours). This is a four-year course of full-time study, consisting of three years of undergraduate study, and one year of honours. Assumed knowledge and required units include engineering, mathematics, chemistry and physics.
- 2.Consider completing postgraduate study such as the Master of Materials Engineering. This is a two to three-year course of full-time study.
- 3.Upon graduating, become a member of Engineers Australia and register with the NER. You may also consider joining Materials Australia.
