What's it like to be a Meteorologist?
Meteorologists analyse the weather to predict future weather patterns. They also provide expert advice during natural disasters and research current and past weather events. The most common Meteorologist is a Broadcast Meteorologist who reports the weather for television, however there are other jobs available if you wish to work as a Meteorologist. Forensic Meteorologists, for example, investigate claims for insurance companies on past weather conditions, while Consulting Meteorologists are hired by retailers, film crews and large corporations to provide expert weather guidance on a variety of projects. Another type of Meteorologist is an Incident Meteorologist, who works with firefighters and emergency management personnel by providing onsite weather support during bushfires and other natural disasters while Tropical Meteorologists focus on tropical storms and hurricanes.
Tasks and duties
- Providing meteorological forecasts, briefs and data.
- Issuing weather forecasts.
- Reporting on the weather, preparing weather warnings, and studying long-term weather patterns.
- Advising governmental and non-profit agencies, as well as private businesses and individuals, on safety during natural disasters.
- Forecasting both short- and long-term weather patterns and changes.
- Teaching at a university or other higher-education level.
- Researching the physics and dynamics of climate change.
- Studying the atmosphere to gain a greater understanding of weather patterns.
How to become a Meteorologist
To become a Meteorologist, you need to complete a bachelor degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences. Alternatively, you may complete a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Mathematics, Physics or a Physical Science. Other degrees may be considered subject to their Maths and Physics content.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences.
- 2.Some graduates choose to complete graduate studies such as a Graduate Diploma in Meteorology or equivalent qualification, accredited by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). Some Meteorologists complete a Masters, or even a Doctorate in Meteorology or in Atmospheric Sciences.
- 3.After completing your degree, you can apply to work for science research centres, news stations, and a variety of other government and private jobs related to climatology.
