What's it like to be a Miner?
Miners operate machinery and equipment to dig, load and transport ore, coal, rock and sand underground or in open-cut mines. It’s common for Miners to work in rural and remote locations, often living a fly-in/fly-out lifestyle.
Tasks and duties
- Operating specialist heavy machinery.
- Drilling, blasting and excavating bodies of ore.
- Loading ore into trucks and cars.
- Building new shafts and developing new drives, rises, crib rooms and air vents.
- Installing lighting, cabling and pump services to the mine.
- Operating heavy machinery.
- Operating pumps to expel air, water and mud.
- Acknowledging and reporting on any potential safety hazards.
How to become a Miner
The qualifications required to work as a Miner depend on the type of role and mine you want to work in. There are pathways through vocational education in mining and drilling, in additional to traineeships and apprenticeships. You may also need specific vehicle licenses, security and medical clearances.
- 1.Complete a vocational qualification in Surface Extraction Operations, Surface Coal Mining (Open Cut Examiner), Underground Coal Mining, Underground Metalliferous Mining, or Surface Operations Management through a TAFE or registered training organisation.
- 2.Alternatively, you may be able to embark on an apprenticeship or traineeship and gain a nationally recognised qualification while working.
- 3.If you want to work your way up to become a Mine Manager, consider completing a Diploma level qualification in mining management.
