What's it like to be a Model?
Models promote, display, wear or advertise products such as clothes and accessories in order to generate sales or create awareness about consumer goods. They may also pose as subjects for art works. Modelling is a highly competitive and demanding industry and is suited to individuals who are dedicated, patient, outgoing and enjoy creative activities.
Tasks and duties
- Participating in auditions and fittings before modelling clothes, footwear or accessories in front of audiences on catwalks.
- Posing and participating in television or print commercials.
- Demonstrating products at trade shows, conferences and exhibitions.
How to become a Model
You do not need formal qualifications to become a Model. Most Models are represented by agencies who help promote them.
- 1.Approach reputable modelling agencies who will assess your suitability for the industry. You’ll need a simple portfolio of images of yourself, along with your statistics (including height, weight, eye colour, hair colour). If the agency signs you on, they will arrange for a professional folio for you. Reputable agencies do not charge money to register with them, although there may be costs associated with getting a photographic portfolio.
- 2.While modelling is a competitive industry, there are many career pathways. There are often opportunities to work overseas or move into a career as a model scout, television presenting or fashion buying.
