What's it like to be a Park Ranger?
Park Rangers preserve national parks, scenic areas, privately owned parks and nature reserves by managing the natural environment and its cultural sites, and by providing visitor services. Park Rangers work in a variety of geographical settings, including national parks, snow fields, rainforests and coastal areas. It’s not unusual for park rangers to work on weekends and public holidays. The majority of Park Rangers are employed by government agencies.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Ensuring the natural, recreational, wildlife and cultural assets of the natural environment are protected, enhanced and managed.
- Identifying any animals, populations or species that are threatened and assisting with protecting them.
- Supporting visitors with their understanding and appreciation of the features of the environment, and maintain facilities for a variety of uses.
How to become a Park Ranger
To work as a Park Ranger in Australia you don’t need a formal qualification, however work experience and/or qualifications are highly regarded.
- 1.Consider undertaking a relevant qualification such as a Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (AHC31421). A bachelor degree in environmental science or management may provide broader career options.
- 2.Aim to gain experience through volunteering within national parks, paid experience working in gardening and landscaping or as a Tour Guide.
- 3.Ensure you have a current driver’s licence. Some hirers may prefer candidates who can drive a 4WD. A current First Aid Certificate and preparedness to be involved in incident management operations may be beneficial.
- 4.With extensive experience, some Park Rangers may move into general management or specific scientific positions.
