What's it like to be a Penetration Tester?
Penetration Testers simulate cyber attacks to identify weak points in the security of an organisation’s information systems. Through their tests, Penetration Testers can expose vulnerabilities. This allows other cyber security professionals to install or upgrade security measures, such as firewall software, to prevent future attacks from occurring. Penetration Testers can work in-house or on a contractual basis. They typically work on software projects and for organisations that hold large amounts of digital information, such as government departments.
Tasks and duties
- Planning and running vulnerability tests on information systems, software and networks.
- Identifying weak spots in a test environment or simulation.
- Communicating the results of tests to employers and other IT professionals.
- Providing security assessments and recommendations on upgrades required to enhance security.
- Keeping up to date with emerging trends and cyber security threats.
How to become a Penetration Tester
Employers typically prefer Penetration Tester candidates with a relevant degree and industry experience. Professional certifications can boost your employability.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in cyber security, computer science, information technology or a related field.
- 2.Gain industry experience. This could be through an internship while studying, or an entry-level role that introduces you to ethical hacking and programming languages.
- 3.Consider advancing your skills with a postgraduate degree, such as a Master of Cyber Security or Master of Information Technology. Professional certifications, such as Certified Ethical Hacker, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), or a bootcamp or short course, can also be beneficial.
