What's it like to be a Physician?
Physicians are highly trained doctors with a medical degree. They may specialise in one area of medicine such as gastroenterology, cardiology, obstetrics or surgery, or they may become a General Physician, providing a range of non-surgical health care services to patients. General Physicians have a broad range of expertise and frequently care for difficult, serious or unusual medical problems, differentiating them from other physicians who treat conditions involving only one body system or disease category.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing and diagnosing patients.
- Treating conditions affecting different body systems or using specialised skills to focus on a single body system or certain disease category.
- Carrying out a variety of medical procedures.
- Providing patients with care and treatment for illnesses and injuries.
- Prescribing medication.
- Communicating underlying conditions and treatment methods with patients.
How to become a Physician
Physicians are highly trained doctors and it takes several years to achieve employment in this role. To become a Physician, you first need to complete a double degree in medicine. This is usually takes six years and entry is competitive, requiring subject prerequisites and a high ATAR. Alternatively, some universities allow you to study a bachelor degree in a related discipline before progressing into postgraduate medical studies.
- 1.Complete a Bachelor of Medical Studies / Doctor of Medicine at an accredited university. If you have already completed an undergraduate degree, you may be able to complete a Doctor of Medicine.
- 2.Undertake a one-to-two-year post-degree residency in a public hospital.
- 3.Become a registered physician with the Medical Board of Australia.
- 4.Doctors interested in becoming a specialist Physician such as a Cardiologist can apply to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) to undertake further training and ultimately receive Fellowship. This normally takes at least six years of study while working as a doctor. Successful trainees will become Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).
