What's it like to be a Prosthetist?
Prosthetists are allied health professionals that assess and treat the physical and functional limitations of people. Prosthetists are qualified to prescribe, design, and fit orthoses and prostheses required as a result of illness, disabilities and limb amputations.
Tasks and duties
- Examine and assess clients to determine their physical needs.
- Measure functionality in different environments, such as work, home and in community settings.
- Make recommendations regarding functional improvement through the use of specific prosthetic devices.
- Work in an allied health team or provide advice and feedback to other health professionals regarding patient care.
- Test and recalibrate or adjust prostheses for functional improvement or increased comfort.
How to become a Prosthetist
A tertiary qualification in prosthetics and orthotics is required for entry into the profession in Australia.
- Complete a relevant qualification, such as a Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics or Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics (Honours).
- Apply for membership with the Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association.
