What's it like to be a Psychotherapist?
Psychotherapists work closely with patients to help improve their wellbeing by addressing emotional and behavioural issues. Psychotherapists often work with clients who are suffering from mental illness, substance abuse, grief or trauma. There are several approaches to psychotherapy – including cognitive-behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy and other kinds of talk therapy – which can help individuals work through and resolve their challenges.
Tasks and duties
- Using different techniques such as talk therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy to help clients find solutions to their challenges.
- Engaging in conversation about the issues facing clients.
- Helping and supporting clients to understand their current issues.
- Helping clients change their behaviour.
- Assessing clients and offering feedback.
How to become a Psychotherapist
Psychotherapy is not a government-regulated profession in Australia, so there are no specific qualifications required to enter the role. However, to become professionally registered with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and develop valuable skills and workplace experience, you’ll need to complete a bachelor degree.
- 1.Complete a PACFA accredited bachelor degree, such as a Bachelor of Counselling.
- 2.Consider enhancing your skills and experience with an accredited masters degree, such as a Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
- 3.Register with PACFA or the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) in order to be listed on the Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (ARCAP).
