What's it like to be a Retail Buyer?
A Retail Buyer is responsible for selecting and purchasing goods that will be sold in retail stores. Retail Buyers tend to be individuals who have a flair for products and trends. They may work in a variety of settings, such as large department stores, retail chains and small family-owned stores. Retail Buyers may be responsible for purchasing stock locally, from interstate or overseas. Some travel may be required for a retail buyer role.
Tasks and duties
- Researching customer requirements and demands; and monitoring sales information and stock levels in order to stay informed of store trends.
- Negotiating the purchase of goods such as fashion, homewares, hardware or toys together with organising the promotion and supply of goods with suppliers.
- Inspecting stock as it arrives, managing stock levels and contacting suppliers to replenish when stock is low.
How to become a Retail Buyer
Formal qualifications are not necessary to work as a Retail Buyer, as informal on-the-job training will usually be provided. However previous sales or buying experience is usually required for this role and relevant qualifications may help secure employment.
- 1.Look for opportunities to gain experience in retail sales and take opportunities to shadow retail buyers or managers in your store.
- 2.Consider applying for assistant buyer positions, or completing training in a specific area of retail, such as a Diploma of Retail Merchandise Management (SIR50317), a Certificate IV in Retail Management (SIR40316) or Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising (MST40519).
- 3.Experienced Retail Buyers may further their career by becoming a merchandise planner.
