What's it like to be a School Nurse?
School Nurses are qualified nurses who deliver health care to school students and staff. They help students with ongoing conditions and deliver first aid and critical care in the event of an injury or illness.
Tasks and duties
- Treating ailments and injuries of students and staff.
- Performing hearing, vision and other health tests.
- Developing and administering care plans for students with ongoing conditions.
- Administering student immunisation programs.
- Educating students and staff on medical procedures and best practices.
- Helping students with disabilities.
- Maintaining records of student treatments and immunisations.
- Ensuring compliance with relevant policies and legislation.
- Maintaining supplies of medications and equipment.
How to become a School Nurse
To work as a School Nurse you will need to be a Registered Nurse (RN). Completion of a bachelor degree in nursing is required. Your course will include a placement that lets you build clinical experience while studying. Background checks are essential.
- 1.Complete a Bachelor of Nursing. This usually takes three years. Prerequisites include completion of Australian high school year 12 (or equivalent) and assumed knowledge in mathematics and English. A minimum ATAR may also apply. Students with a previous tertiary qualification can complete a Master of Nursing (Graduate Entry), which takes two years.
- 2.Apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to practise as a Registered Nurse. Registration must be renewed annually.
- 3.Complete a Working with Children Check and a Police Check. You may also need to complete additional training certifications such as a CPR qualification. This should be renewed annually.
