What's it like to be a School Principal?
As a School Principal you will be the leader of a school, supervising teachers and all other staff, and managing the school budget. You will also be involved in student disciplinary matters and interact with the public as a representative of the school. One of your primary responsibilities will be to ensure that students are receiving a quality education and that proper safety and disciplinary procedures are in place.
Tasks and duties
- Recruiting and training teachers.
- Managing the administrative and financial affairs of a school.
- Establishing policy and procedure guidelines in conjunction with the school council.
- Liaising with other schools, parents, and the wider community.
- Implementing systems and procedures to check school performance and student enrolments.
- Supervising the maintenance of school facilities to provide a safe working environment for staff and students.
- Creating a standardised disciplinary code for the school and enforcing discipline within the school.
- Networking with other schools in the area and attending meetings and conferences.
- Working with teachers and staff to plan and oversee educational curriculum that adheres to standards set by local and state governments.
How to become a School Principal
School Principals usually begin their careers as Teachers, which requires a bachelor degree in Education or Teaching. Many people who aspire to becoming a School Principal are now encouraged to undertake postgraduate studies.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in Education. These are generally four-year courses, open to anyone who is 17 or over and has completed Year 12 with an appropriate Universities Admission Index.
- 2.Alternatively, if you already have a bachelor degree in another discipline then a postgraduate degree such as a Master of Education or Master of Teaching is an option.
- 3.Register with your state’s Teacher Registration Authority become a qualified teacher and find work in a school.
- 4.Gain experience working as a teacher and consider taking on leadership roles such as Head of Mathematics or Head of English.
