What's it like to be a Shipwright?
Shipwrights build and repair boats of all sizes, from light vessels like canoes to heavier vessels like naval ships and yachts. Shipwrights generally work in shipyards, small boat yards, marinas or other workshop environments away from the waterfront. They can be required to work in all kinds of weather.
Tasks and duties
- Reading and interpreting plans, blueprints and specifications.
- Creating templates and plans for fabrication and cutting.
- Drawing lines and reference points on slipways and dry docks.
- Assembling boat shells and raising hulls.
- Supervising pre-launch testing and launching procedures.
- Fitting and installing decking, masts, shafts, safety equipment and frames.
- Building and fitting cabins, propeller supports and rudders.
- Repairing damaged vessels and fittings using aluminium, glass, plastics, fibreglass, concrete, Kevlar and glass.
How to become a Shipwright
To become a Shipwright, you’ll generally need to complete an apprenticeship. Employers usually require a minimum of Year 10 level education.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Marine Craft Construction (MEM30719) through a TAFE or registered training organisation.
- 2.Alternatively, complete an apprenticeship and gain hands-on experience under the guidance of qualified Shipwrights.
