What's it like to be a Solutions Designer?
Solutions Designers design secure, stable and supportive technology solutions that improve productivity, lower costs and streamline day-to-day activities for an organisation. They assess current computer systems, design and develop new technology solutions and integrate software and hardware to fit the digital systems within a business.
Tasks and duties
- Developing proofs-of-concept to validate the feasibility of proposed solutions.
- Identifying issues and presenting alternatives to alleviate or resolve problems.
- Producing detailed component specifications and translating these into detailed designs for implementation.
- Leading technical analysis, implementation and deployment.
- Creating detailed software designs and implementing and/or maintaining code.
- Assisting Software Designers and Implementers in creating detailed software design specifications.
- Designing data assets and ensuring they meet the needs of customers and the business.
- Liaising with data users across the business to understand their data needs.
- Working with data engineers to implement, test and deploy designs.
How to become a Solutions Designer
To become a Solutions Designer, you typically need to complete a bachelor degree and have extensive industry experience. Some employers may prefer candidates with a postgraduate degree.
- Complete a bachelor degree in a relevant field, such as information technology, information systems, software engineering or computer science.
- Consider advancing your skills with a postgraduate degree such as a Master of Engineering (Software) or Master of Information Technology.
- Gain industry experience. This can start with an internship while you’re studying. Seek roles that focus on internet technologies, programming languages and system design, such as Computer Programmer or Software Developer.
- Continue to develop specialised skills through IT certifications, such as Microsoft Azure Certification.
