What's it like to be a Solutions Engineer?
Solutions Engineers are IT professionals who act as an interface between an organisation and its clients or stakeholders. Using a mix of IT and business skills, they help organisations to create and implement tailored technology solutions and streamline business processes.
Tasks and duties
- Explaining technical solutions in plain language.
- Liaising with clients and technical and sales teams to determine requirements and solutions.
- Brainstorming with Software Developers and Engineers to find solutions to problems.
- Determining the optimal and most cost-effective solutions.
- Presenting solutions to clients and stakeholders.
- Overseeing integration of new systems and technologies into existing platforms.
- Providing cost and timeline estimates to clients and stakeholders.
- Creating proposals and reports.
- Identifying problems with solutions and recommending corrective actions.
How to become a Solutions Engineer
You can work as a Solutions Engineer without a formal qualification provided you can demonstrate an equivalent level of skills and experience. Advanced knowledge of Agile project management and enterprise IT technologies is essential. A bachelor degree in computer science or a related field is typically required.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in computer science, information technology or software engineering. This usually takes three to four years.
- 2.Look for internship opportunities while studying to build your experience and receive mentorship from experienced IT professionals.
- 3.Consider completing postgraduate study, such as a Master of Computer Science. This usually takes one to two years.
- 4.Develop knowledge of Agile project management methodologies and enterprise systems and technologies such as SAP, Salesforce, Azure and AWS through a short course or workplace experience.
- 5.Attain additional certifications from industry vendors as required.
