What's it like to be a Sound Technician?
Sound Technicians set up and operate equipment used to record and amplify music and sound. They work in studio or live environments where they are responsible for the installation, operation and maintenance of sound equipment.
Tasks and duties
- Setting up, calibrating, testing and operating live sound equipment, public address (PA) equipment and studio recording equipment.
- Using software and hardware to monitor and mix audio signals.
- Determining sound equipment requirements.
- Instructing performers on positioning and usage of equipment.
- Recording audio in a live or studio setting.
- Building and installing sound systems.
How to become a Sound Technician
You can work as a Sound Technician without formal qualifications, but a qualification in music industry or a related field may be advantageous. Traineeships may be offered by some employers, and some on-the-job training is usually provided.
- 1.Seek out traineeship opportunities with local employers in the music and performing arts industries.
- 2.Complete a relevant qualification. This could be a Certificate IV in Music (Sound Production) (CUA40920).
- 3.Develop a catalogue of your own studio recordings to show prospective employers.
- 4.Develop your specialisation as either a studio technician working in a recording studio environment or a live sound technician in a public address (PA) environment.
