What's it like to be a Specification Manager?
Specification Managers typically promote and sell their company’s products to builders delivering a construction project. To do this, they work closely with key engineering, architectural and design staff to identify products that meet the needs of a project, and understand the key selling points of each product. They often report to a Sales Manager and work in manufacturing, trade and construction industries.
Tasks and duties
- Advising and providing expert knowledge of products or services to clients such as builders and engineers.
- Meeting with clients to discuss product solutions.
- Building relationships with customers and key stakeholders.
- Staying updated with construction projects to identify sales opportunities.
- Making presentations to customers.
- Negotiating sales.
How to become a Specification Manager
There are no formal qualifications required to become a Specification Manager, but experience in sales is usually required. Product knowledge can be developed on the job. A relevant bachelor degree may be beneficial.
- Consider completing a bachelor degree in business, marketing or a related discipline.
- Gain experience working in a sales role.
