What's it like to be a Statistician?
Statisticians create and use statistical theory and techniques to collect, interpret and analyse numerical data to assist with decision-making and policy within a broad number of areas including science, government, medicine, business and education.
Tasks and duties
- Collect, analyse and interpret data to produce useful statistics that highlight particular trends or patterns.
- Ensure that the method of data collection and the analysis methodology is valid, efficient and accurate.
- Record, present and represent the data graphically and report on findings to managers, team and stakeholders.
How to become a Statistician
To become a Statistician in Australia, a university qualification in mathematics or statistics is usually required.
- Undertake a qualification in statistics, mathematics or econometrics. This may be a Bachelor of Statistics or a Bachelor of Science (Statistics). Alternatively, students with previous related qualifications may wish to undertake a Master of Applied Statistics.
- Apply to become a member of the Statistical Society of Australia. Registration is not mandatory to work as a statistician in Australia however accreditation indicates you have achieved an acceptable level of professional competence.
- Supervisory and higher management positions is just one pathway for experienced Statisticians. Other career pathways include specialising as a biostatistician, becoming an Epidemiologist or an Applied Statistician.
