What's it like to be a Textile Designer?
Textile Designers create designs for different kinds of cloth, material and fabrics to create garments, soft furnishings and wallpapers. Textile Designers may develop patterns, prints, textures and illustrations for the production of fabrics.
Tasks and duties
- Consulting with clients and business partners to determine a design brief.
- Researching products and assessing fabrics and samples.
- Analysing commercial, cultural and functional requirements.
- Creating designs using manual and computerised techniques.
- Working up patterns for clothing, soft furnishings, wall coverings, bed linens and carpets.
- Working with electronic looms and computerised knitting machines.
- Supervising the production process.
- Keeping abreast of trends and innovations.
How to become a Textile Designer
While completing formal training is not required to become a Textile Designer, a qualification may be an advantage in developing design skills.
- 1.Gain experience working alongside a senior Textile Designer, developing skills and confidence.
- 2.Consider completing a Certificate IV in Textile Design, Development and Production (MST40119).
- 3.Alternatively, you can also undertake a Bachelor of Fine Art, Bachelor of Design and Fashion or a Bachelor of Textiles. They generally take 3 years to complete and you will need to have completed year 12 or explore alternative paths to entry.
