What's it like to be a Town Planner?
Town Planners review existing areas, assist in gaining planning permission for developments and ensure that developments are assessed for their environmental and economic impacts. They work with other stakeholders in the development industry to review projects before they undergo the planning application process.
Tasks and duties
- Researching current community needs.
- Staying up-to-date on local and national building codes.
- Writing reports and creating detailed plans for development proposals.
- Meeting with local council members to discuss proposals.
- Preparing paperwork for a project’s application.
- Negotiating with local council members to gain approval for development proposals.
How to become a Town Planner
To become a Town Planner, you usually need to complete an accredited university degree. Relevant postgraduate studies can improve your employability.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA). This could be a Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning, Bachelor of Urban and Environmental Planning or Bachelor of Planning.
- 2.Gain work experience. You could undertake an internship while you’re studying. Or you could consider volunteering at a local planning office or council.
- 3.Become a member of the PIA to enhance your credentials and open up professional development opportunities.
- 4.Consider a relevant postgraduate degree, such as a Master of Urban and Regional Planning, to build the skills for more senior roles.
