What's it like to be a Vehicle Mechanic?
Vehicle Mechanics use tools to repair, service, maintain and test the mechanic components of motor vehicles and their related parts, such as the engine, clutch, gear box, brakes, wheels and tyres.
Tasks and duties
- Identifying problems in engines and parts, and removing or repairing faulty components.
- Undertaking scheduled maintenance services, such as oil changes, routine tune-ups and lubrications.
- Assessing and adjusting new components and ensuring they comply with standards and regulations.
How to become a Vehicle Mechanic
A qualification in a mechanical field together with an apprenticeship is usually required to work as a Vehicle Mechanic in Australia.
- 1.Undertake a qualification in a relevant mechanical field such as a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR30616) and complete an apprenticeship. An apprenticeship generally takes three to four years to complete.
- 2.Many specialisations are available to vehicle mechanics, such as becoming an automatic transmission mechanic, a roadworthy assessor, or ground support equipment fitter for the Air Force. Additional licensing and study are often required to fulfill these roles.
