What's it like to be an Aerospace Engineer?
Aerospace Engineers design, analyse and maintain aircraft, spacecraft, satellites and missiles, and develop new technologies for use in aviation, defence and exploration. They apply scientific and technological theory to predict how designs will perform, and where they may fail.
Tasks and duties
- Create mathematical models or conduct computer analysis according to customer engineering requirements.
- Evaluate designs to see that the products meet engineering principles.
- Design aircraft, spacecraft, satellites and missiles.
- Create and test prototypes to make sure that they function according to design.
- Coordinate and direct engineering personnel.
- Diagnose performance problems.
- Investigate system, equipment, or product failures.
Aerospace Engineers are required to have an understanding of physics, mathematics, and aerodynamics, in addition to the properties of the materials commonly used in the construction of space and aircraft.Aerospace Engineers may specialise in a particular field such as aerodynamic fluid flow, structural design, navigation, robotics, propulsion and combustion. They may also choose to specialise in an aerospace product, such as helicopters, jets, or rockets.
How to become an Aerospace Engineer
To become an Aerospace Engineer you’re usually required to complete an engineering degree with a major in aeronautical or aerospace engineering.
- Obtain a Bachelor of Engineering (Aerospace Engineering) (Honours) from a university. This is usually a four-year full-time degree. Prerequisite subjects, or assumed knowledge, in one or more of English, mathematics, chemistry and physics are normally required.
- Look for opportunities to pursue an internship, placement or partnership programs to build industry connections and gain valuable hands on experience.
- Upon graduation, you may be eligible for membership with Engineers Australia.
