What's it like to be a Behaviour Support Practitioner?
Behaviour Support Practitioners play an important role in assisting people with special behavioural or emotional needs. They typically use their expertise in mental health, occupational therapy and social development to help patients and students implement new behavioural treatment strategies to improve their wellbeing.
Tasks and duties
- Observing, recording and evaluating a patient’s or student’s behaviour.
- Developing and implementing behavioural treatment strategies that are responsive to a patient’s needs.
- Providing assistance, guidance, training and coaching throughout the treatment process.
- Liaising with patients, their parents, teachers and allied health providers to provide holistic support.
- Gathering data about a patient’s progress through assessments, observations and interviews.
- Ensuring support practices comply with relevant regulations such as The National Disability Insurance Scheme.

To become a Behaviour Support Practitioner, you usually need a relevant bachelor degree. After graduating, you need to register with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to practise your profession.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in behavioural science, psychological science, social science, social work or a related field.
- 2.Gain experience. This could be in an entry-level role in behaviour support, counselling, the disability sector or an NDIS-related role.
- 3.Register with the NDIS to become a Registered Behaviour Support Practitioner. This includes an assessment process to test your suitability for the role.
- 4.Attain additional checks and licences as required by your employer, such as a Working with Children Check, worker screenings and a driver’s licence.
- 5.Consider completing a postgraduate degree to further your skills and career. This could be a Graduate Diploma in Psychology.
