What's it like to be a Recreation Officer?
Recreation Officers organise and coordinate sporting, cultural and recreation programs and activities. They work with people of all ages and lead outdoor activities and recreation programs in their local community.
Tasks and duties
- Developing, coordinating and maintaining community programs and resources.
- Planning and promoting community events.
- Assisting with the hiring, training and supervision of recreation staff.
- Consulting with community members to identify aspirations, issues and concerns.
- Planning and organising local sporting, cultural and recreational programs and events including community functions, sporting competitions, hobby classes and community arts projects.
- Assisting in submission process for new and existing projects requiring funding.
- Providing support to, and exploring alternatives with clients experiencing difficulties such as marital problems, unemployment, illness and drug abuse.
Working with members of the public on a daily basis and being in tune to the wants and needs of their local community are central to the role of a Recreation Officer. They work for government authorities, community organisations, schools, health and fitness centres and sports associations.
How to become a Recreation Officer
You can work as a Recreation Officer without formal qualifications, but a qualification in sport and recreation, leisure or business administration may give you an advantage. Additional certifications may be required by some employers.
- Consider completing a relevant qualification of your choosing. This could be the Certificate III in Sport and Recreation (SIS30115).
- Seek out opportunities for employment at local recreation centres and community centres to build your experience.
- Complete a First Aid course from a registered training organisation (RTO) to gain your First Aid certificate.
- Undergo a working with children check with your state government. Checks require identification verification and usually accept online applications.
- If you wish to expand your career options, consider completing a further qualification in sport and recreation or business administration, such as a diploma or university degree.
