What's it like to be a Review Officer?
Review Officers review claims, disputes and decisions on behalf of governments and other organisations. They use knowledge of policies, acts and legislation to help ensure organisational compliance. For example, a Review Officer may review a worker’s compensation claim against relevant legislation.
Tasks and duties
- Reviewing decisions relating to policies or claims.
- Helping to ensure compliance with relevant laws and legislation.
- Developing review processes and compliance structures.
- Issuing official notices in line with relevant legislation.
- Writing decision letters.
- Interpreting and applying policies and legislation.
- Communicating with clients and stakeholders.
Review Officers need good written and verbal communication skills, computer skills and the ability to work to deadlines. They work for government departments and for companies in industries such as banking, finance, insurance and professional and technical services.

You don’t need any formal qualifications to work as a Review Officer, but a qualification in compliance or risk management may give you an advantage. An equivalent level of experience may substitute for a qualification in some cases. A bachelor degree is beneficial but not essential.
- 1.Complete a qualification, such as the Certificate IV in Compliance and Risk Management (10964NAT) or Diploma of Quality Auditing (BSB50920). Both courses usually take one year to complete and prepare you for roles in risk, compliance and auditing. Alternatively, you may broaden your career options by completing a bachelor degree in law or a related field. This usually takes between three to four years.
- 2.Complete a Police Check which may be required by some employers.
- 3.Develop experience working in an entry-level role in government, banking, insurance or financial services.
