What's it like to be a Chief Technology Officer?
Chief Technology Officers are responsible for an organisation’s technological product and service offerings. They coordinate the organisation’s IT resources and activities to ensure they align to strategic goals and support business growth.
Tasks and duties
- Developing goals and strategies for IT departments and staff.
- Directing the hiring and training of IT staff.
- Ensuring alignment of technical products and services to wider business goals.
- Increasing revenues by delivering new products and services.
- Managing teams of software developers and engineers.
- Collaborating with vendors to improve supply solutions.
- Leading others to create new technologies and solutions that support business growth.
- Reviewing an organisation’s technology products to enhance and improve them.
How to become a Chief Technology Officer
A bachelor degree in computer science, IT or a related field is usually required in order to become a Chief Technology Officer. Some people currently working in this occupation have completed postgraduate study. You may also be required to hold extensive industry experience.
- 1.Complete a degree in computer science, software engineering or a related field. These are usually three-year course of full-time study, with prerequisites including completion of Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) and required units or assumed knowledge in English and mathematics.
- 2.Consider completing postgraduate study, such as the Master of Computer Science or a Master of Business Administration.
- 3.Consider completing additional IT and management certifications to enhance your strategic skill set.
- 4.Consider joining a professional association, such as the ACS. You may be eligible for student membership while studying, with full membership becoming available upon graduation.
- 5.Gain extensive work experience in a leadership capacity across a range of businesses or work your way up through a company. In small and medium companies, you may attain the position of Chief Technical Officer with fewer years of experience, whereas larger companies may require over a decade or more of industry experience.
