What's it like to be a Content Writer?
Content Writers create written content for online channels such as websites and social media. They write both long-form and short-form content including web pages, blog posts, whitepapers, video scripts, social media posts and emails. Content Writers work to deadlines and can discuss complex topics using plain language. They work for marketing agencies, media publications and other organisations with a focus on online marketing. They may also work as freelancers, servicing a list of clients.
Tasks and duties
- Researching themes and topics for use in content creation.
- Writing web pages, blog posts, social media posts, emails, whitepapers and other written content.
- Reviewing content for style, grammar and tone of voice.
- Staying updated with news and trends in target industries.
- Ghost-writing content on behalf of others.
- Editing, proofreading and submitting content before deadlines.
- Including relevant keywords in written content.
- Developing subject matter expertise in chosen topics.
How to become a Content Writer
You can work as a Content Writer without a formal qualification, but a bachelor degree in communication or journalism may be beneficial. Other tertiary qualifications or an equivalent level of experience may substitute for a university degree in some cases.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in communication, journalism or a related field. This usually takes three years of full-time study.
- 2.Look for internship opportunities while studying to gain workplace experience.
- 3.Develop a working knowledge of digital marketing and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
- 4.Build a portfolio of work to show prospective employers and clients.
