What's it like to be a Cosmetic Nurse?
Cosmetic Nurses are Registered Nurses (RNs) who specialise in performing non-surgical cosmetic procedures to enhance a client’s appearance or improve their health. They may also assist Cosmetic Physicians, Surgeons and Dermatologists in various aspects of patient care.
Tasks and duties
- Consulting with patients, including scheduling, interviewing and medical screening prior to services being provided.
- Assessing skin to develop a holistic treatment plan for each patient.
- Performing a range of cosmetic procedures such as injections of dermal fillers and Botox, non-surgical facelifts, micro-dermabrasion, laser and IPL, laser tattoo removal and laser hair reduction.
- Assisting Cosmetic Physicians, Surgeons and Dermatologists in surgeries, consultations and post-operative care.
- Performing administrative tasks such as managing patient documentation and organising before and after photographs.
- Preparing and sterilising instruments and surgery suites.
How to become a Cosmetic Nurse
Becoming a Cosmetic Nurse requires a combination of study and work experience. You will first need to become a Registered Nurse (RN) and get endorsement from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). You will then need to complete further study in order to specialise in the area of cosmetic nursing.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in nursing. This could be a Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Science (Nursing). Alternatively, if you already have a degree in another field, you can complete a masters degree in nursing.
- 2.Become an RN by registering with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- 3.Gain around two years of clinical nursing experience. You may choose to build this experience while completing postgraduate studies.
- 4.Complete an approved postgraduate degree in cosmetic nursing. This could be a Graduate Diploma of Cosmetic Nursing and Injectables (52852WA).
