What's it like to be a Diagnostic Technician?
Diagnostic Technicians are certified automotive technicians. They inspect vehicles using specialist tools to diagnose and repair faults. Working closely with other technicians and customer service staff, Diagnostic Technicians are responsible for finding and explaining a vehicle’s issues, as well as planning maintenance and repairs.
Tasks and duties
- Using specialist tools and software to detect, diagnose and repair faults in motor vehicles.
- Providing technical support and guidance to customer service staff.
- Performing scheduled maintenance on vehicles.
- Planning repairs and ordering parts and inventory.
How to become a Diagnostic Technician
You need a qualification in automotive diagnosis and extensive work experience to work as a Diagnostic Technician. You can achieve this through an apprenticeship, which combines practical and theoretical training. It takes three to four years to become qualified.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR30620) as part of an apprenticeship. This usually takes three years.
- 2.Consider advancing your skills by completing a Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis (AUR40216). This usually takes six months.
- 3.Develop your specialisation in one or more automotive brands to strengthen your skills. This can be gained through a mix of vendor certifications and on-the-job experience.
