What's it like to be a Driving Instructor ?
Driving Instructors educate people, either individually or in groups, on the safe and effective operation of a vehicle. Driving Instructors can teach classes on vehicles ranging from motorcycles and scooters, through to cars, trucks and buses.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Teaching road traffic rules and regulations.
- Teaching students about road and vehicle safety.
- Explaining and demonstrating the use of vehicle features such as the brakes, accelerator, clutch, gears, indicators, lights and transmission.
- Teaching advanced techniques, such as what to do in an emergency.
- Advising students on when they are ready to sit their test, and when they might need some further instruction.
How to become a Driving Instructor
To become a Driving Instructor, you’ll need to a hold a state-issued driver’s licence and a specific Driving Instructors licence.
- 1.You need a specific Driving Instructors’ licence. Before you can apply for a Driving Instructor’s licence, you’ll need to hold an unrestricted, state-issued drivers’ licence and several years of driving experience. You can find out more about driver licences by contacting your local traffic authority.
- 2.You’ll usually need to complete a Certificate IV In Motor Vehicle Driver Training (TLI41222) to work as a driving instructor. You can earn this through TAFE or a private training college.
- 3.If you plan to instruct children under 18, you’ll need a Working With Children Check.
