What's it like to be an Economist?
As an Economist you will be primarily concerned with analysing the production, distribution and consumption of resources, goods and services.
Tasks and duties
- Carrying out surveys and collecting macroeconomic data (i.e. consumption spending, business investment, government spending, exports and imports) in order to predict when a rise or fall in the growth of the economy will occur.
- Preparing reports and charts that forecast market trends (e.g. retail spending, housing approvals).
- Collating and interpreting complex information and data such as terms of trade or exchange rate movements.
- Using spreadsheets, software programs, database management programs, and statistical analysis.
- Creating mathematical models to predict future economic developments.
- Communicating your findings in reports and charts to make the data understandable to stakeholders.
- Analysing microeconomic data such as market share and size of companies.
How to become an Economist
To become an Economist you will need to complete tertiary qualifications.
- 1.Complete a Bachelor of Commerce or a Bachelor of Economics. Students often complete their Honours year as well.
- 2.Many Economists also obtain a Master of Economics, or even a PhD in a specialised area of research within the Economics discipline.
